Part 1: The Inspiration
|
The inspiration for Dragon came from a birthday card that Dav Pilkey made for a friend, way back in 1989. See below.
Dav's friend placed the card on her bookshelf, and every time Dav saw it, he thought about creating stories for that dragon. One day Dav took the card to his studio and began to draw that dragon again and again. Dav loved the simplicity in the dragon’s eyes, and decided to simplify the rest of him, too. He drew and redrew the dragon over and over again until it was small, round, and simple. See below.
Finally, Dav had his character. Now all he needed to do was think up stories for him.
