Part 4: The Dummy
|
A “Dummy” is where an illustrator makes a sketchy version of the book before beginning the final art. Dummies are very helpful, because they give an illustrator the chance to see what a book will look like BEFORE he or she spends a lot of time making the final artwork. Dummies are usually quick and easy to make, so artists can feel free to try out lots of different ideas, and even make mistakes, because very few people will ever see the dummies. Check out chapter 1 of the dummy below:
Initially, Dragon’s Halloween was to be the fourth book, and Dragon’s Fat Cat was to be the final book in the series. But because of a scheduling issue, Dav was asked to make Dragon’s Halloween the final book in the series.
If you compare these illustrations with the artwork in the final book, you’ll notice that something is missing from these pencil drawings: Dragon’s cats.
Since this story initially took place BEFORE Dragon’s Fat Cat, Dav hadn’t included any cats in these drawings. So when he did the final artwork, Dav had to go back into all the “Dummy” pages and find room for all of Dragon’s cats. Dav was very glad that it worked out that way. To him, the book seemed warmer and sweeter with a bunch of cats hanging around (just like in real life).
