Part 1: The Inspiration
This book was written during a tough time in Dav's life. He was trying to get his story 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving made into a book, but every publisher he sent it to rejected it. Every time another rejection letter came in the mail, Dav would feel more and more like a failure.

One of Dav's friends suggested that he stop whining and start working on a new book. So Dav took his friend's advice... sort of. He didn't stop whining (that was too much fun). Instead, he began working on three new books.

Dav found an old birthday card he had made for his friend back in 1989, and he decided to do a series of books based on the dragon he had drawn on that card.

Dav wanted this dragon to be smaller, rounder, and simpler, so he began drawing and re-drawing the dragon until it looked more like this:
