Part 1: The Inspiration
|
The inspiration for 'Twas the Night Before Thanksgiving came when a librarian in Cleveland told Dav that he should write a Thanksgiving book. So Dav began working on a parody of Clement Moore's famous poem, "The Night Before Christmas". Dav's love of animals played a major part in the creation of this story.
This was only the second picture book that Dav had ever written, and he found the job very difficult. He also endured a major setback when the first draft of his story was eaten by a bunch of cows (see the "Book Page" for this story). But after a great deal of perseverance, Dav finally finished his story. Now it was time to bring his words to life through illustrations.
Dav visited a turkey farm, took some photos, then began making full-color paintings to try and find an illustration style that would best suit the silly, yet good-hearted theme of this story. These are a few of those paintings.
