Special Notes

"I've always loved gargoyles, and have collected them for years. One day an electrician guy came over and saw all the gargoyles in my house. He got really nervous and asked me if I was a devil worshipper or something. I explained to him that gargoyles are 'good' creatures that were used to drive away evil spirits from churches and cathedrals. He still thought I was pretty weird." — Dav Pilkey

Dav was puzzled by the electrician's reaction to the gargoyles. The electrician saw the fierce looks on the gargoyless faces and decided that they were evil. Even when the electrician had been told the truth, he still couldn't get past thinking that if they 'look' bad, they must be bad.

"I had always wanted to make a book about gargoyles, but never knew how to approach it until that day. Gargoyles are misunderstood. So often we look at things and make judgments about them without taking the time to understand them. First impressions are not always correct.

So instead of writing a story about gargoyles, I decided to write about the way gargoyles (and other misunderstood creatures) are perceived." — Dav Pilkey
