Dav Pilkey created this story to be a companion to his "Dumb Bunnies" books. In fact, the Dumb Bunnies were going to appear in the sequel, "The Silly Gooses Build a House". "Eventually, I wanted to have a whole neighborhood of silly friends who got into all kinds of dumb adventures. I had outlines for a series called "The Goofy Gorillas", "The Loopy Llamas", and notes for at least three other families of happy goofballs. Shortly after I finished this book, however, I began working on the first "Captain Underpants" story. That series took off so quickly that I haven't had time to get back to these picturebooks. Hopefully some day I'll be able to return to these characters and continue building their wacky neighborhood." — Dav Pilkey

Dav's pal, Don "The Fonz" Libertowski came up with the name of the ice-cream store: "Remember the 'A La Mode". So Dav dedicated the book to him.
