This book is the first in which Ricky's cousin, Lucy appears. Lucy was based on Dav Pilkey's own experiences as a kid. When Dav was growing up, most of his cousins were females. So at most family gatherings, Dav was forced to hang out with a bunch of girls. "When boys are at a certain age, the thought of hanging out with girls isn't very appealing. I'd never be too happy about the situation at first. But after a while, I'd sort of forget that they were girls. We'd start jumping out of trees, throwing rocks, or burning stuff with magnifying glasses, and pretty soon they didn't seem like 'girls' anymore... they just seemed like friends.
