This is the second of five books in Dav's beginning reader chapter book series starring Dragon. This book was perhaps a foreshadowing of things to come in Dav Pilkey's career. The story is basically a collection of misunderstandings. Dragon spends all day doing things which are familliar to us all, but he gets every single one of these things wrong! "I never expected the reaction that this book got from kids. Every time I visited a school or got some fan mail, it seemed like all anybody ever talked about was Dragon Gets By. It was all the rage! I wondered about this for a long time. Although I'm really very fond of this book, it's probably my least favorite Dragon book because there's no real story. It's just a bunch of jokes. Then it dawned on me: This book is like 'the Stupids'. It's got that whole 'Amelia Bedelia' thing going for it. Ever since then, I wanted to do a whole series of books in that style (where 'story' takes a back seat to jokes, puns, and sight gags). But alas, the Dumb Bunnies wouldn't occur to me for another two years!" — Dav Pilkey

Not-So-Fun Fact: For some reason, Dav had a lot of trouble writing this book. He got so discouraged that he threw it away! Fun Fact: Dav's editor couldn't believe that the story was that bad, and she insisted on seeing it. When she read it, she laughed and laughed. "This is great," she said, "Except for one thing." She took out a pair of scissors and cut the story into four pieces. Then she switched two of the pieces around and taped it back together. "Now it's perfect!" she said. And that was that!
