"Dragon" started out as an awkward, smiling character that Dav drew on a birthday card for one of his friends. Dav quickly forgot about this dragon until one day many months later, when he noticed the card sitting on a bookshelf in his friends house.
| "I saw something in the eyes of that dragon. Im not quite sure what it was, but I kept thinking, Theres something about
that Dragon!' After a few weeks, I took the card
home to my studio and wrote a few stories about this gentle, lonely character. The first story I wrote was A Friend for Dragon."
"Of all the stories Ive ever
written, A Friend for Dragon is one
of my favorites. Its a very silly story with
bright, bold pictures, but theres a subtle
spiritual thing going on that gives the book (and I think
the character of Dragon) great depth." — Dav Pilkey |
To create the personality of Dragon,
Dav only had to look at the eyes of the dragon on the
birthday card. The simple cartoon eyes suggested a
character who was just that: simple! So Dav
decided to make Dragon as simple as possible. He gave
Dragon a simple life, a simple home, and of course, a
simple mind! |
