Martha Jane (a.k.a. "Big Dog") has had many run-ins with skunks, and this book is loosely based on one of them.
One summer, one of Dav's friends decided to take Big Dog and Little Dog to the beach for a relaxing day. She loaded the dogs into the car and drove three hours to Bandon, Oregon. As soon as they arrived, she opened the car door and Martha Jane jumped out and ran over to a nearby bush.
"Sssssssssssssss!"
Martha Jane hadn't even been out of the car for one minute when she got sprayed by a skunk. She smelled horrible! Dav's friend spent the rest of the day inside a hotel bathroom washing, re-washing, and re-re-washing Martha Jane with can after can of tomato juice (tomato juice is the only thing that gets rid of 'skunk funk'). The tomato juice stained Martha Jane's fur and turned her PINK for weeks! . So much for a relaxing day at the beach!
Dav used his friend's bad experience as an inspiration for this book.
