Dav wrote and illustrated "World War Won" in January of 1986. He was still in college at the time, and wrote the book to impress a girl he was dating (she was impressed, but not for long.)
A reading teacher told Dav about a new contest called "The National Written and Illustrated By...Awards Contest for Students". The winners of this contest (kids between the ages of 6 and 19) would get their books published! So at the age of 19, Dav mailed off his very first book to the contest, and crossed his fingers. A few months later, Dav received a telephone call from David Melton, the Creative Coordinator of the Written and Illustrated By...Contest.
| "I'm really not sure what Mr. Melton said to me on the phone, I just remember hearing these three words: ' you', ' winner', and 'congratulations'. I think he talked for a while, but I have no idea what he said (or what I said for that matter). After that, all I remember was screaming and jumping up and down for about six months." — Dav Pilkey |
In December of 1986, Dav flew out to Kansas City, Missouri. There Dav designed the cover of his book, worked side-by-side with professional editors and art directors, and even toured the press where his book would soon be printed! Since then, nearly forty kids have had their books published through this cool contest!
