This is the Real Big Dog & Little Dog Their real names are Martha Jane and Little Dog. Yes, 'Little Dog, is her real name! Little Dog lives with Dav Pilkey in Eugene, Oregon. Martha Jane lives with Dav's friends down the street.

"The Big Dog & Little Dog books started out as a joke. I was trying to make my friend laugh by making up stupid little stories about two of our dogs. Later that night, I started thinking that these might actually be pretty good books for toddlers. So I sat down and wrote the first four stories." — Dav Pilkey Dav originally planned to illustrate these books with photographs of his dogs. But when he began to sketch out the rough drafts, he "fell in love" with the sweet cartoon dogs he had drawn. He decided to paint the books using these two characters instead. Besides starring in this series, "Little Dog" has appeared in Dav's bedtime story, The Moonglow Roll-O-Rama. Martha Jane (a.k.a. "Big Dog") also appears in the book When Cats Dream (as the "big orange dog").
