The idea for this book came from a real incident which happened in 1996 to Dav's sister, her husband, and their two sons, Aaron and Connor.
| "My sister and her husband took my two nephews to the Cleveland Zoo when the two boys were just toddlers. The Cleveland Zoo is a really nice place, with tons of cool animals and stuff. But the only thing my nephews were interested in were the ants! The two boys spent the whole time looking down at the tiny ants crawling around on the sidewalks (they could have seen that at home!), and paid no attention to the giant giraffes, elephants, and bears that were right in front of them. My sister and her husband were not especially amused by this, but I thought it was hilarious. I remember thinking: 'That sounds like something that The Dumb Bunnies would do.'" — Dav Pilkey |

So Dav called Sue Denim and together they worked on a story. Dav thought it would be funny if the Dumb Bunnies mistook everyday creatures (birds, butterflies, and kitties) for the exotic animals at the zoo (elephants, lions, and gorillas!) Within a week, Sue had written a hilarious story, and Dav began illustrating it right away.
